COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK: First Coast Christian helps cancer fight

Students at First Coast Christian School, 7587 Blanding Blvd., have raised $3,700 for leukemia and lymphoma research, education and patient services. They participated in Olive Garden's 11th annual Pasta for Pennies campaign for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, a voluntary health organization with 63 chapters in the United States and branches in Canada.

In North Florida, students from Duval, Clay, Alachua, Leon and Marion counties raised a combined $42,529. Nationwide, the campaign brought in $3.1 million.

Students raised the money by bringing spare change into their classrooms during a three-week period. The class collecting the most funds in each school received a pasta party courtesy of Olive Garden.

The top local fund-raisers were First Coast Christian followed by Fleming Island Elementary School in Clay County, $3,459; Blessed Trinity Catholic School, 10472 Beach Blvd., $3,075; and Beaches Episcopal School, 1150 N. Fifth St., Jacksonville Beach, $2,834.
